You probably know that iOS 5, released a few days ago, introduced Notification Center.

Some people, since it was announced, asked me if I was going to continue working on Notified, or improving Notification Center.

The answer has always been no, I made Notified because it was a feature missing from the OS, now it’s not.

I’ve moved on, I’m working on a few other projects, I just hope you enjoyed Notified as much as I did.

You can still use Notified if you want to, here’s a list of available packages of Notified on Cydia:

Notified - The original free Notified, doesn’t have the slide down list, works on iOS 3.0 - 4.X
Notified Legacy - The last release of Notified Pro (1.5.3), it’s free and works on iOS 3.X
Notified Pro - The latest version that was available on the beta repo. If you bought Notified, you will be prompted to update. It works on iOS 4.X

As for Bill, well, he looks exactly the same then as he does today. I’m not even sure he has changed out of that outfit.

Lastly, take a look at those faces. That’s some serious geek pride going on there. They own the world and they know it. Good for them.

You probably know that on monday Apple announced a new notification system at WWDC.

As some of you pointed out, it looks a lot like Notified: pull-down drawer, notification bar, etc., some of you even said that Apple had ripped me off.

I don’t feel that way.

For starters, the drawer idea wasn’t that new, Android had it before Notified, and while I never used it personally, the concept was a big inspiration.
(It did come as a surprise that they used the swipe down gesture, with the rumor of they hiring Peter Hajas, I thought they were going with the notification list above the multitasking drawer)

As for Notification Bar, I didn’t see anything like that before Notified, but it’s not a terrible innovating idea; instead of showing the notification at the middle of the screen, try to move it to somewhere less important.

So yeah, I would have loved if Apple had sent me an email saying “Hey, we love your notification system, come work with us”, but you can’t always get what you want.

Anyway, many of you were left wondering what was gonna happen with Notified.
I don’t want it to end as a beta, so I’ll try to push a release as soon as I can, but I won’t work too hard on new features.

I also find it really cool that Apple made a system so similar to Notified, because it means we were doing it right.

We’ve had a great run, and I hope you all enjoyed Notified like I did, and I want to thank you for all your support.

Notification Bar for Notified 1.6

I know I announced this update like a week ago, but I had some problems releasing it. Today I did some work, I tested the update all day and it worked as expected.

While it’s not a huge update, it’s an interesting one, as it adds 5 things to Notification Bar:

Adds a settings page in the Settings.app
Adds a switch to enable/disable the notification bar.
Adds an option to auto dismiss the notification; this has 4 options: Off (it won’t auto dismiss), On (it will always auto dismiss), Homescreen Only (it will auto dismiss only when the notification was shown while the device was unlocked), and Lockscreen Only (the oposite of Homescreen Only).
Adds an option to change the position of the bar; either at the bottom of the screen, or at the top (right under the statusbar).

The last thing is new gestures.

The close button was removed to make more room for the notification.
To dismiss the notification, press and hold the notification bar.
To launch the associated application, either tap on the icon, or double tap the notification bar.
No action is assigned to a single tap to prevent you from accidentally tapping the notification when it shows up.

This update is live on Cydia on the Notified Beta repo, I hope you like it and let me know what you think.

Music Notifications

A few minutes ago I tweeted a screenshot with music notifications on the screen, I want to explain what this does and what it doesn’t do.

Here’s the screenshot:

What it does:

Sends a notification to the plugins with the artist and title of the song, and the music icon, so the plugins display it as a regular notification.

What it doesn’t do:

It does not save that notification to the notifications list. This is a really low priority notification that doesn’t need to be on the notification list, so it will only show with the plugin you’re using.

If you don’t like it, you can just add the music player to the Ignored Applications list in settings.

Notified Beta Update

I just uploaded a new beta of Notified which includes:

Changed “Auto Delete on Badge Reset” to “Auto Delete on “Application Launch”, changed the way it works to, hopefully, avoid lockups of devices.
Improved the Notification Bar plugin to honor the “Custom Icons” setting.

Please continue to report bugs.

Why isn't Notified themeable

When Daniel and I started working on Notified, it supported themes, in fact, the first beta on M* had a pretty much complete theme support. What happened to that?

At an early stage of development, we realized that themes represented a big hit on the performance of the app, an app which was supposed to be quick and light.

Having theme support means having a lot more images in place, a lot more checks to see where to position everything, what colors to use, what font size, and many more things.

We decided to sacrifice customization in favor of performance, and I think it was the right choice.

We were able to focus on one simple but great design, standard enough to fit with most configurations, and simple enough to be really fast and light.

We’re really proud of how this turned out, and it’s not changing anytime soon, so don’t hold your breath for themes support on Notified.
